Laser hair removal is more than just ”zapping” unwanted hair. It is a medical procedure that requires training to perform and carries potential risks. Before getting laser hair removal, you should thoroughly check the credentials of the doctor or technician performing the procedure.
Lasers are useful for removing unwanted hair from the face, leg, chin, back, arm, underarm, bikini line, and other areas. Benefits of laser hair removal Lasers can selectively target dark, coarse hairs while leaving the surrounding skin. Each pulse of the laser takes a fraction of a second and can treat many hairs at the same time. The laser can treat an area approximately the size of a quarter every second. Small areas, such as the upper lip, can be treated in less than a minute, and large areas, such as the back or legs, may take up to an hour. For optimal results, avoid exposing the treated area to the sun for 2 to 4 weeks prior to your treatments. Sun exposure can increase your risk of complications, so make sure to use a sunscreen with an SPF 30 or greater that blocks both UVA and UVB rays.
You should also stop waxing, tweezing, threading, depilatories and electrolysis for at least 3 weeks prior to treatment and throughout treatment. You should, however, shave the treatment area the day of or night before your appointment.
Laser hair removal targets and disables hair follicles with non-invasive laser energy without harming the surrounding skin.
Laser hair removal only works on active hair follicles. Because not all hair follicles are active at any given time, one treatment cannot disable every targeted follicle. Therefore, we recommend that you have at least 6 treatments spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart. This will vary from patient to patient, depending on the area you want to treat and your goals.
We recommend that you stay out of the sun for at least one week following treatment and continue to apply SPF 30 or greater for long-term skin health.
You may experience some redness following your treatment, but this should dissipate in the hours after treatment.
